A while ago I met up with a couple of friends for dinner at Palatino. We started off with fried sage with honey vinegar. Unfortunately I don’t have a picture but I was pleasantly surprised as I was confused about having sage on its own. Imagine the sage in a light tempura-like batter … perfect to snack on while waiting for the starter.
I love octopus so we decided to share the starter as we didn’t know what to expect; the menu only stated something like octopus, tomato and olive oil. What we received was nothing like I’d expected, thinly sliced octopus, with bits of tomato, drenched in olive oil? It looked very pretty but I wasn’t sure about how anything drenched in that much olive oil could taste okay. Obviously I was wrong, if you love octopus or even seafood in general, order this dish! I definitely made the mistake of ordering this to share, I could’ve easily had two plates to myself…
Next, I ordered the chicken, pancetta and pistachio meatballs with polenta. Again, I wasn’t sure what I was in for as I hadn’t had polenta before but you can’t go wrong with meatballs. This time, I was right! I didn’t realise the combo of meatballs and polenta could be this great, I now understand why Americans enjoy shrimp and grits so much (adding this to the list of things to try next). I even attempted to recreate the combo myself at home, it wasn’t as good as Palatino but still yum.
If you’re looking for an Italian restaurant that isn’t your typical pasta and pizza, head to Palatino, you won’t be disappointed.
